It is renowned for the home of the world's highest mountains, medieval cities, and the forested plains where the mighty tigers and the great one-horned rhinoceros trundle at ease. Nepal is also renowned for its continuous festivals. Nepalese people are popular for observing more festivals than there are days in the year, due to which thousands of visitor's from a different part of the world are attracted towards it. If you are planning to visit Nepal check your travel date to make sure that you will arrive in festival time which allows witnessing the fabulous culture and traditions of different communities people. You will be amazed by our festivals because you can witness only in a few countries in the world as fascinating as Nepal. Here is the list of major and interesting festivals are listed below:




1. Navavarsha(Nepali New Year) (April)
Normally the Nepali New Year's Day usually falls in the second week of April., the first day of Baisakh. On this day it is observed as the national holiday. People celebrate it with great pomp and show. On this auspicious occasion, Bisket Jatra is held in the city of Bhaktapur.

2.Baisakh Poornima (April - May)
Nepal is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the light of Asia. On this day the triple anniversary of the Buddhas birth, enlightenment and death is observed with many colorful ceremonies. People celebrate this auspicious occasion for paying homage to Buddha at places like Swayambhunath and Lumbini.

3. Red Machchhendranath Rath Jatra (May - June)
This is the biggest festival and it is popular for a socio-cultural event of Patan. The wheeled chariot of a deity known as Bungdyo or red Matchhendranath is prepared at Pulchowk and dragged through the city of Patan in several stages till it reaches a prescribed destination at Lagankhel. The grand finale of the festival is called the "Bhoto Dekhaune". A similar type of chariot festival of Machhendranath. On this day it is also observed at Kathmandu city.

4. Dumji (July)
This festival is celebrated in all the Sherpa settlement in the month of July. Most of the Sherpas of Khumbu and Helambu regions participate in dancing on this day.

5. Gaijatra(Cow Festival) (July - August)
It is a carnival type of festival which lasts for eight days. On this day Dancing, Singing comedy and anything that caused mirth and laughter are its highlights. Those people whose family members have died during the years send out persons dressed up as a cow to parade the main through welfare of the city on the city on the first days of the festival.

6.Krishnastami(July - August)
This is the auspicious occasion that marks the birthday of Lord Krishna, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. On this day, an impressive ceremony is held at the Krishna Temple in Patan and Changu Narayan.

7.Indrajatra(August - September)
The festival of Indra, the God of rain, is observed with great enthusiasm in Kathmandu Valley. Normally the festival is celebrated in August - September lasting for eight days. The Chariot of Kumari, the living Goddess, is taken out in procession through the main streets of Kathmandu. The festival is especially noted for the echoes of drums and dancing feet of the masked dancers almost every evening.

8.Dashain(September - October)
The Dashain festival is the most important festival in the Nepalese. The entire country celebrates with peace and harmony at the time of the festival.

9.Tihar(Deepawali)(October - November)
The festival of lights "Tihar" is celebrated for five days. On this day houses are illuminated at night and the special sweets of diverse kinds are prepared.

10. Vivaha Panchami(November - December)
It is one of the popular festival held at Janakpuri in Dhanusa district in the eastern Terai. This occasion commemorates the marriage of Sita to Ram, one of the most venerated Hindu divinities It attracts thousands of pilgrims from India. 

11.Prithvi Jayanti(January)
This festival is celebrated in honor of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of Modern Nepal, with a colorful ceremony in front of the Singh Durbar Gate in Kathmandu on January 10/11(Poush 27th).

12.Lhosar(February)
This is a festival which is impressively observed in the month of February by all the Tibetan speaking populations. They organize folk songs and dances on this occasion. These dances can be seen in Khumbu, Helambu and other northern regions of Nepal and also at Boudhanath in Kathmandu.

13.Maha Shivaratri(February)
The night of Lord Shiva is observed to honor Lord Shiva. A great religious fair takes place in the Pashupatinath Temple and thousands of people from all over Nepal and India visit the temple.

14.Ghodejatra(March - April)
This festival is popular for the festivals of horses, it is one of the most exciting festivals of Kathmandu City. Horse race and other sports take place at Tundikhel on this day. In other parts of the city, the various deities are carried shoulder-high on a wheelless chariot with the accompaniment of traditional music.
