Accommodations

If you are wondering about accommodation in Nepal. Don't worry about it. Nepal has a wide variety of accommodation which ranges from five-star hotels to budget hotels and lodges. In order to get quality service, it's better to use only the facilities of government registered hotels and lodges.

Restaurant and Food

Different kinds of food representing the culinary arts of many parts of the world can be easily found in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Most of the Hotels may have several restaurants under one roof serving a wide variety of dishes while individual restaurants cater to several types of cuisines like Chinese, Indian, Continental, Japanese, Tibetan, Nepalese etc.


Adventures

Nepal is a land of paradise with its pristine culture and natural beauty. Adventure in Nepal offers off-beaten trails or virgin trail. There is something for everyone- the magnificent tumble of great snow summits, the highest in the world, or great-ridges carpeted in alpine flowers, a forest of rhododendron, isolated hamlets, villages, small mountain, towns, birds, animals, temples, monasteries many different people etc. Trekking can be done from October to May, however, the best seasons are October to May, but October and November are best seasons indeed. To assure quality service and safety purpose it is advisable to make the trekking programmes through a government recognized trekking agency.

Rafting

Rafting in Nepal offers worthwhile memory for a lifetime. There are numerous fine rivers in Nepal which offer excellent rafting or canoeing. You can glide on calm jade water with a magnificence of scenery all bout or rush through roaring white rapids, in the care of expert rivermen employed by government authorized agencies.

Permit for Trekking

For foreigner intending to trek in any part of the kingdom of Nepal shall have to obtain a trekking permit from the Department of Immigration restricted area permit are obtained from Immigration office. But for the normal routes, permits can be easily obtained by joining the trekking agency. Some of the rules for trekking are as follows:

-Trekking may be undertaken for only one place or an area at a time.
-Trekkers should follow the route prescribed may create serious problems regarding security, food, and accommodation.
-It is advised to arrange trekking through the registered trekking agencies to prevent oneself from any unseen accident which may occur at any time during the trekking period.
-While trekking it is advisable to take only authorized guide and porter.
-Be careful with matches around wooded or grassy areas, forest and grass fires cause serious damages.
-Be most economical with all fuel, especially regarding the local firewood use minimum fuel for hot showers and discourage camp-fire.
-Trekkers are strictly forbidden to cut any green forest resources and to kill any wildlife.
-Give preference to lodges and trekking companies that do not use firewood and encourage their efforts to conserve the environment.
-Support measures to reduce pollution and improve the environment.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude Sickness, often known as Acute Mountain Sickness, if not treated when symptoms first appear, can lead to death. It is the effect of altitude on those who ascend too rapidly to elevations above 3,000 meters. Early mountain sickness will manifest itself in headache, loss of appetite and sleeplessness. Do not ignore these warnings otherwise more serious symptoms can occur which can even cause death sometimes within a few hours. Being young, strong and fit does not help. Medicine is no substitute for descent. If a doctor is available, he/she may give medicine and oxygen. However, the patient must go down even if given treatment. If you travel in the Khumbu region you can contact at khunde, and Pheriche hospital and if you travel to Manang you can contact and Manag hospital respectively for altitude sickness and information. Doctors are available there during trekking season.

If you are travelling to Nepal make sure that Tribhuvan International Airport is one and only international airport in Nepal. Nepal Airlines the national flag carrier of Nepal and other international Airlines operates flight from Bangkok, Colombo, Calcutta, Dhaka, Dubai. International flight operating their flights in Kathmandu are Biman Bangladesh, China Southern, Malindo Air, Qatar Airways, Fly Emirates, Druk Air, Indian Airlines and Thai Airways.

BY LAND

The entry points for Nepal are Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Belahiya, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadi and Mahendra Nagar. The only entry point at Nepal from China is Kerung, Rasuwa and Kodari.


BY ROAD TRANSPORT

If you are travelling from the border of India. The road transportation is only options to travel Nepal. Kathmandu is a major hub connected with India through the fertile plains of the Terai by the most fabulous highways. Visitors are permitted to drive their own cars but their vehicles must possess an international carnet. There are regular bus service to Kathmandu from all the border points. The interior parts of the country are also linked with a number of motor-able roads. Buses for the different parts of the country are available at the Gongabu bus terminal which is located near Balaju.


BY RAILWAY TRANSPORT

Nepal Janakpur - Jayanagar Railway operates a freight and passenger service in the eastern Terai.


DOMESTIC AIR SERVICE

The Nepal Airlines operates an extensive network of air service in the interior parts of Nepal. It has scheduled flights from Kathmandu to Taplejung, Bhadrapur, Rajbiraj, Bhojpur, Phaplu, Lukla, Lamidanda, Tumlingtar, Rumjatar and Biratnagar in the Eastern Development Region to Simara, Janakpur, Ramechhap, Jiri, Bharatpur and Meghauli in the Central Development Region: to Pokhara, Jomsom, Manang, and Bhairahawa in the Western Development Region; and to Nepalgunj, Chaurjhahari, Surkhet, Dang, Juphal, Jumla in the Mid- Western Development region and to Bajura, Baitadi, Dipayal, Darchula, Mahendranagar, Dhangadi, Tikapur in the Far- Western Development  Region.

Nepalese people are popular for observing more festivals than there are days in the year, due to which thousands of visitor's from a different part of the world are attracted towards it. You will be amazed by our festivals because you can witness only in a few countries in the world as fascinating as Nepal. Here is the list of major and interesting festivals are listed below:




1. Navavarsha(Nepali New Year) (April)
Normally the Nepali New Year's Day usually falls in the second week of April., the first day of Baisakh. On this day it is observed as the national holiday. People celebrate it with great pomp and show. On this auspicious occasion, Bisket Jatra is held in the city of Bhaktapur.

2.Baisakh Poornima (April - May)
Nepal is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the light of Asia. On this day the triple anniversary of the Buddhas birth, enlightenment and death is observed with many colorful ceremonies. People celebrate this auspicious occasion for paying homage to Buddha at places like Swayambhunath and Lumbini.

3. Red Machchhendranath Rath Jatra (May - June)
This is the biggest festival and it is popular for a socio-cultural event of Patan. The wheeled chariot of a deity known as Bungdyo or red Matchhendranath is prepared at Pulchowk and dragged through the city of Patan in several stages till it reaches a prescribed destination at Lagankhel. The grand finale of the festival is called the "Bhoto Dekhaune". A similar type of chariot festival of Machhendranath. On this day it is also observed at Kathmandu city.

4. Dumji (July)
This festival is celebrated in all the Sherpa settlement in the month of July. Most of the Sherpas of Khumbu and Helambu regions participate in dancing on this day.

5. Gaijatra(Cow Festival) (July - August)
It is a carnival type of festival which lasts for eight days. On this day Dancing, Singing comedy and anything that caused mirth and laughter are its highlights. Those people whose family members have died during the years send out persons dressed up as a cow to parade the main through welfare of the city on the city on the first days of the festival.

6.Krishnastami(July - August)
This is the auspicious occasion that marks the birthday of Lord Krishna, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. On this day, an impressive ceremony is held at the Krishna Temple in Patan and Changu Narayan.

7.Indrajatra(August - September)
The festival of Indra, the God of rain, is observed with great enthusiasm in Kathmandu Valley. Normally the festival is celebrated in August - September lasting for eight days. The Chariot of Kumari, the living Goddess, is taken out in procession through the main streets of Kathmandu. The festival is especially noted for the echoes of drums and dancing feet of the masked dancers almost every evening.

8.Dashain(September - October)
The Dashain festival is the most important festival in the Nepalese. The entire country celebrates with peace and harmony at the time of the festival.

9.Tihar(Deepawali)(October - November)
The festival of lights "Tihar" is celebrated for five days. On this day houses are illuminated at night and the special sweets of diverse kinds are prepared.

10. Vivaha Panchami(November - December)
It is one of the popular festival held at Janakpuri in Dhanusa district in the eastern Terai. This occasion commemorates the marriage of Sita to Ram, one of the most venerated Hindu divinities It attracts thousands of pilgrims from India. 

11.Prithvi Jayanti(January)
This festival is celebrated in honor of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of Modern Nepal, with a colorful ceremony in front of the Singh Durbar Gate in Kathmandu on January 10/11(Poush 27th).

12.Lhosar(February)
This is a festival which is impressively observed in the month of February by all the Tibetan speaking populations. They organize folk songs and dances on this occasion. These dances can be seen in Khumbu, Helambu and other northern regions of Nepal and also at Boudhanath in Kathmandu.

13.Maha Shivaratri(February)
The night of Lord Shiva is observed to honor Lord Shiva. A great religious fair takes place in the Pashupatinath Temple and thousands of people from all over Nepal and India visit the temple.

14.Ghodejatra(March - April)
This festival is popular for the festivals of horses, it is one of the most exciting festivals of Kathmandu City. Horse race and other sports take place at Tundikhel on this day. In other parts of the city, the various deities are carried shoulder-high on a wheelless chariot with the accompaniment of traditional music.

Nepal Wonders Treks & Expedition P. Ltd provides a package for sporty people who want to enjoy the views of the Kathmandu Valley with a small adventure, there are several places favorable for hiking and mountain biking on and around the rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Good bikes ranging from one to 18 speed and Thailand to American can be rented from many shops around town. Some of the popular trails are as follows:

BALAJU - KAKANI

Head off towards Kakani off the bifurcation at Balaju. It is a moderate ascent to this hill resort 23 km northwest of Kathmandu. The entire trips offer a magnificent view of the valley along with the fresh and serene atmosphere of the hills. The route passes through forests, waterfalls, and meadows. There are several restaurants on the way if you feel like resting or munching on some snacks.

BHAKTAPUR - DHULIKHEL

 If you are looking for a peaceful ride, the road leading from Bhaktapur to Dhulikhel, a hill resort 32 km east of Kathmandu, is simply terrific. The highway hardly sees any traffic and the view offer is magnificent. Dhulikhel can also be approached from Banepa, 4 km east of Dhulikhel can also be approached from Banepa, 4 km east of Dhulikhel, and Nala, 4 km northwest of Banepa. Further hiking to Panauti, three hours south of Dhulikhel, is possible.

BHAKTAPUR - CHANGU NARAYAN

Walking north from Bhaktapur, turn left from the road leading to Nagarkot to reach Changu Narayan. The six-hour walk is an easy one with panoramic views of the mountains, fields and the Manohara river. There is also a small village on the eastern side of the temple. A hike to Nagarkot from Changu Narayan takes five hours and is more adventurous.

SANKHU - NAGARKOT

Starting off towards the east from Sankhu, it takes around three-four hours to hike to Nagarkot, a hill resort 32 km east of Kathmandu. The road passes through terraced fields and strutted houses. This route is fun for mountain biking too. On your way to Kathmandu, returning from Nagarkot, you can take a different route leading towards Banepa, passing through Nala, which takes around five to six hours.

CHAMPA DEVI

Champa Devi hill (also known as Dhinacho) is one of the four major pilgrimage peaks on the valley rim. Situated to the southwest of Kathmandu, the 2,247-m summit contains a shrine of a goddess Champa Devi and a Buddhist stupa. A popular way up is from Haatiban on the road to Dakshinkali. The trail takes two-three hours and begins next to the Haatiban Resort car park. The first stretch is a pleasant hike through pine forests filled with birds. Great views of Pharping to the left and Kirtipur and Taudaha Lake to the right. The final approach is a very steep climb over rock outcroppings. For the return, you can avoid using the same route by continuing west along the ridge and climbing down the northern slope to Naikap on the highway to Thankot.

HIKING TO TIKA BHAIRAV

Located 24 km south of Kathmandu is the peaceful village of Tika Bhairav. Several places can be reached on foot from here. The hike to the ruined fort of Kot Danda follows the trail up to Tinpane Bhanjyang Pass (2,011 m) then to the summit of Moyle Danda and on to Kot Danda down the ridge. The entire trip offers magnificent views of the Himalayan range. Another hike leads to Gupteswar Mahadev walking along the southern bank of the Bhardev stream. The trail passes through Chhetri, Newar and Tamang settlements.

AROUND KIRTIPUR

Kirtipur is situated 6 km southwest of Kathmandu and can be reached in half an hour on a bike. On reaching the main bazaar, head north uphill to the Bagh Bhairav temple which has an interesting tale. Bike further uphill to reach the Shiva Parvati temple from where you can have a splendid view of the Kathmandu Valley. Return to the bazaar and take the road leading southwest and then follow a dirt road to the Adinath Lokeswar temple.
